Performance and Production

Out of the black we have switched to the new performer David DeVries, and since Out of the Black has been released Audible has rerecorded the previous books in the series. David Devries solves the problem of everyone in the series sounding like they were about to take a nap, but it did feel overdone. David DeVries performance takes a while to find his stride, eventually exchanging loudness for hardness. The production of Out of the Black is solid keeping the performance flowing and listeners involved. 4 out of 5

Story

Out of the Black opens with the start of the siege of earth the Drasin have beaten the earths defensives and they Odyssey scatters though New York City. The Drasin are landing troops onto earth when Captain Eric Westin walks out of the wreckage of his ship, with help from the NYPD and a few old friends Captain Westin starts to clean his area of the world of Drasin. Earth is a battlefield with fighting in every corner of the world, can humanity hold long enough to find a weapon to beat the Drasin or if the enterprise can bring friends to save Earth.

Evan Currie kept the action moving in Out of the Black, from start to finish he packs in action from across the globe. The President of the NAC and premier of the Bloc, fighters all over the world, while keeping the focus on Captain Westin manages to avoid the trap of making that Westin saves the world in a mech suit and laser rifle. Out of the Black really delivers with almost no filler dragging out the story, and has you rooting against the odds until the very end. 5 out of 5

Overall

The change in performer gives the Odyssey One series the hardness that it had lacking in previous entries to Out of the Black. David DeVries while not perfect in his performance really help push the series up to another level that a good performance can give. Evan Currie gave a solid story to perform and the two meshed will. 5 out of 5
